I haven't yet read any other episode commentary, but here are my two cents:
I was so disappointed with this series finale. I loved the first season of this show and have found the second and third seasons to be a little uneven, but I still really cared about the characters and was happy it was on my television. This episode left a bad taste in my mouth from the standpoint of being a season finale, let alone a SERIES finale.
Major problems with the show as a SEASON finale:
Creating a new mystery storyline in the final episode that deserved more than a single episode treatment
Misuse of Kyle Secor--I was unspoiled for Jake Kane's return (not even paying attention to the guest star credits) so I gasped when I saw the portrait of Lily. I was convinced this was going to give closure to the show. It did not.
What happened to the whole Fitzpatrick storyline? That never went anywhere.
Keith and Veronica (IMO, the heart of this show for three years)--I'm still not sure I understand the point of Veronica stealing the hard drive--to show the lengths Keith would go to protect her? I knew that already. Or maybe to show how short-sighted she is? The way it is left is that the last major plot point of their relationship is a lie on her part and avoidance. It just...depresses...me.
Glad to see Wallace, Piz, Mac, Parker, Logan and Weevil, but this episode felt like the penultimate episode of a season, not a finale.
Now, on to my bigger issue--
Major problems with episode as a SERIES finale:
No closure. Seriously, they knew they were on the bubble. "Supernatural" producers knew it as well and created a great episode that could work as a season or series finale. I felt that there was NO effort made to develop the same approach for VMars. The writing smacks of either laziness or arrogance (convinced they were going to get renewed). As such, the fans were cheated. I, for one, can only hope that a lot of good fanfic comes out of this "finale" that can get this sour taste out of my mouth.
Okay, rant over.
